E-Defense
The 3-D, Full-Scale Earthquake Testing Facility (nicknamed “E-Defense”) is the “ultimate testing facility” capable of subjecting to-scale buildings to seismic shocks equivalent to the 1995 Southern Hyogo Prefecture Earthquake in three dimensions (front/back, left/right, up/down). It contributes to research and development of improved earthquake resistance that allow detailed analysis of the shaking and process of damage and collapse, and actual improvement.
Program Overview
Sample Plan | 1. Measurement Control Lobby Introduction to facility, overview using footage of experiments ↓ 2. Experiment Building (observation of shaking table) A 3-D shaking table is set up to observe the main parts of the actual six degrees-of-freedom seismic simulator ↓ 3. Hydraulic Unit Building Tour of the hydraulic pump and accumulator which provide the power for the shaking table and gas engine which provides the power for shaking ↓ 4. Preparation Building Tour of facilities where specimens for experiments are constructed ↓ 5. Outdoor Preparation Yard ■Facility tour days & times Weekdays: 9:30 - 17:00 * Reservations only (first-come, first-served basis) * Except Sat, Sun, holidays, year-end and New Year holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan. 3) and summer holidays (August 14 - 16) * There may be other days on which tours may not be given for various reasons. |

Notes | ■Tour capacity: Maximum approx. 50 people (including group leader)■If you wish to observe an actual shake test, you must register for a public seismic testing session. ※To reduce the risk of COVID-19 infections we are currently limiting the number of participants on this program to twelve people per group. Participants will also be asked to follow certain guideline to reduce the risk of infection during the program. |
