Tatami mats are used as flooring in traditional Japanese rooms from the grandest castle to the average home.
Tatami are covered with woven soft rush (igusa) straw and the core is traditionally made from rice straw. In this program, Mr. Maeda, a local tatami maker will explain the history, culture, and unique characteristics of tatami. Participants will learn how tatami were popularised in Japanese homes and will also have the opportunity to make their own mini tatami mat using traditional techniques.
